Beth Mackle (She / her)
I am a multi-disciplinary illustrator and filmmaker based in Glasgow, Scotland.
My practice involves building work adjacent to moving image. My illustrations and mixed media work serves to aide my process of filmmaking. From experimental text work to set design to storyboarding, all this body of work serves to convey my vision for the narrative.
In the project, i created text base work based on sentence prompts. I wrote out several prompts and chose ones at random to spur a narrative. Prompt titles are written in red above the text.
Jist (The Marrow of a Rejection Letter)
Over the course of a year, i have been adapting my practice as a film maker into refining my vision for the films i want to produce. Jist (The Marrow of a Rejection Letter ) was a short story that was created with the intention of being produced into a short film. Through experimental creative writing pieces, story boarding , set design and screen test, a full vision of a short film was created.
It tells the story of a production assistant, who’s role is to type up rejection letters for unsuccessful scripts for a film production company. In the middle of typing, their paper becomes jammed in the feed of the typewriter. In frustration, they leave the bustling writing pool to make a phone call to their significant other. When they head back to their desk the space is empty. They shrug off the atmosphere as they reach their station, the half finished rejection letter lies loosely across the typewriter. As they fix the registration, to finish their last letter – their finger snags.
The Pang of Hunger
A liminal space is the time between the ‘what was’ and the ‘next.’ It is a place of transition, waiting, and not knowing. Liminal space is where all transformation takes place, if we learn to wait and let it form us.
With a story about someone entering liminal space(s), it can’t really have a linear plot because for a liminal space to exist it needs to be taken out of its original context. Using a typewriter i had created an experimental writing prompt from the perspective of someone in this position, who would be moving through liminal space. I was trying to evoke this mercurial pattern in the direction of the pattern of speech. This then became the main bulk of the script that the storyboards and then the final film treatments. Due to the lack of linear storytelling, i had decided to format the final outcome as a spiral bound film treatment to consolidate it into a medium that could be absorbed professionally.
My approach to filmmaking, is that i am involved with the conception, the shooting and post production.
I want to design my own opportunities for making films and tell stories that i regard as important even if others do not.
