Innovation & Technology Sound for the Moving Image
Connor Kyle
I’m a musician with an interest in photography and cultural studies. My time at GSA has allowed me to study some of the Japanese media that has inspired parts of my work. Through my music project ‘cafe allegro’, I hope to not only bring cultures of Japanese indie, hip-hop, and UK underground music into my work, but also make documentaries and educational videos that share the findings from my dissertation project.
Tokyo on Film
Tokyo on Film was part of my dissertation project that looked at cultural influence in Japanese media. The film evolved to be a on-site experiment in film photography and musical soundscape. I spent 5 days in Tokyo taking snapshots of daily life in photo and audio, and pieced these together on returning to Scotland. The end result is a musical piece in 3 movements.
Home: inspired by places I had been on previous trips, residential areas, and homes of friends.
Noise pollution: a comment on the inescapable commercialism and bustle of the mega city.
Sleepless: an ode to the beauty of the city at night, and the feeling of wandering it, lit up and sleepless.
Sail the Digital Ocean
I made Sail the Digital Ocean for a year 4 project. It was my first real breakthrough in musical soundscape. The piece was inspired by digital communication and loneliness in the modern day, particularly the idea of sending an idea out into the vast digital ocean and never hearing back.
