Innovation & Technology Product Design

Jack Mcgilvray

Hello there, my name is Jack McGilvray and I am a Bdes Product Design student who has been studying in and around GSA from 2020-2024.

I have an overall fondness for design and during my time at GSA I have been involved in many interesting and exciting design projects for which I have gained a huge amount of knowledge. My personal interests during this time have been the hands on approach to making, 3D modelling and prototyping which has led to many final outcomes during my years at GSA to be tangible 3D deliverables. Alongside this in my personal time I enjoy drawing, something that I have been actively doing since 2020. It is a fantastic pastime which I do most days and has been a great hobby to do for the past few years.

FootWare – Self Initiated Project

Our feet are more important than we think, anchoring points which help us through our day. We cover about 115,000 miles or 4 circles of Earth in our lifetimes. When put like that you might think twice about overlooking your feet. At FootWare our products are here to help you, through our unique design mix of modern technology and primitive methods. Our ‘Modular Sole Unit’ is designed to strengthen your feet through progressive conditioning. This works by our modular design. Each module is tailored to a specific point in your foot. These modules are then filled with a selection of natural materials from FootWare. We have a wide selection, like sand if you’re a beach goer or concrete if you enjoy walks in the city. How does this work exactly? The product mimics an uneven surface when in motion. It may seem primitive, but uneven surfaces are a fantastic way of building foot strength and maintaining balance through its ever-changing layout. Our product brings this sensation into your lifestyle. Each modules thin, durable design allows the sensation of the materials to be felt in the feet, stimulating the foots small muscles. Think of it as a workout for your feet.

CPC – Future Experiences Individual Project

Your Circadian Parity Companion or CPC for short, is a product which falls under the HOLI organisation. Provided by your Circadian Rhythm Analyst, HOLI’s CPC system marks the start of adjusting the day to suit you. Structuring you day is hard, whether it’s a new job or simple finding the time in this modern world, CPC is designed to put you on the right track. The CPC system is broken down into 3 parts: ‘Dial’, ‘Logbook’ and ‘Monolith Depot’. ‘Dial’ is your own device for tracking your daily ongoings by measuring HOLI’s 3 section breakdown of the day; Work, Engage and Rejuvenate, simply represented in a colour format. The ‘Dials’ centre shows the daylight expectancy of each day, allowing you to plan every day all year round. Store each week’s data in your ‘Logbook’, a 2 part device that links with your ‘Dial’ to record and store a week’s worth of your data. Unlock using your fingerprint and pair the ‘Dial’ for data transfer, insert one of our CPC cards before depositing. Deposit this information at one of our ‘Monolith Depots’. Your Circadian Rhythm Analyst will receive this information, allowing them to understand how you navigate your day and provide helpful advice.

HOLI – Future Experiences Group Project

Our World

In 2033, the future of work aligns with natural rhythms and prioritises individual and planetary well-being. Automation has sparked diverse skills, fostering collaboration and interdisciplinary work habitats. These habitats focus on sustainability, coexisting, ecological balance and shared responsibility.

Holism is at the forefront of our civilization. The future of working is no longer confined to the traditional 9-5 schedule but instead synchronises with the natural cycle of the seasons and individuals’ circadian rhythms, fostering an interconnected relationship between society and the environment.

Automation has brought about an increased need for new jobs, prompting rapid skill-based learning that encompasses a wide range of expertise through collaboration. In future habitats, fast-construction practices have been replaced with a sustainable, enduring approach. These habitats are designed to be wildlife-friendly, allowing humans and other species to co-inhabit harmoniously.

Holi integrates work-life harmony into existing businesses, prioritising personal well-being over company productivity and efficiency. Our main focus is: Work, Engage and Rejuvenate.

As little as one-sixth of the day is allocated to work. It is a dynamic mix of skill-building, eco-conscious productivity and seasonal interdisciplinary projects. These foster altruism, societal well-being, sustainability and innovation. Our workplaces are striving to enhance both individual fulfilment and global betterment.

Individuals can devote as much as half their day to engaging – nurturing our personal and altruistic needs. This involves skill development, connecting with nature, community engagement and quality time with loved ones. All of which play a part in our personal growth and ecological responsibility.

We value mindful personal hours, dedicating around one-third of the day to rejuvenation. This involves enriching personal experiences, through preparing balanced meals, practising meditation, unwinding and ensuring adequate sleep. Rejuvenation time is integral to recharging and fostering a positive mental state.
