Jordan Gallacher (He/Him)

Jordan is a mixed media artist who incorporates physical and digital methods of creation into his work. His background is in expressionism with a focus on self-portraiture but he has started to branch out into digital practices such as experimenting with video manipulation, augmented reality, creative coding, 3D modelling and much more. His work varies in material and concept from piece-to-piece but he has a clear interest in collage-style methods and the concept of ‘clashing together’ contrasting visuals, materials and themes in hopes of drawing unlikely connections and bringing things into a new light. Within the work he is responding to internal concerns about the world and his place in it, with various pieces which aim to question societal systems, the routines of human life and the state of being.

Wires, Veins and Tears in Rain

‘Wires, veins and tears in rain’ explores concepts of chance and allowing for external intervention in the process of art creation. This project involved multiple different methods of passing over control in various ways, as well as encouraging the mess and error which comes from not having full control over one’s fate. A large part of this exploration was in capturing specific moments, movements and actions that would otherwise go by unnoticed and become lost to time and memory.

Development

These works vary widely in media and material as I was experimenting with different methods of involving chance and ‘randomness’, working within set parameters and from pre-set rules. This involved a lot of rolling, printing, moving and dropping, as well as adopting a collage-style method of merging together different results and trying to find something of importance within the final results.

With this project I wanted to explore the intersection of chance and movement, seeking to capture those fleeting moments that might shape our memories before they are gone. Through my broad range of experimentation I have sought to find new ways of capturing the essence of movement in all its complexity and aimed to give it the space to be interpreted.

Work In Progress Show

For the work in progress show I opted for choosing 4 pieces from my various studies and displayed them in a grid format beside each other.

Each piece is a result of different processes and rulesets undertaken on different days. They each become an imprint or memory of that specific moment and attempt to highlight the various spontaneous movements and steps taken to achieve the final visuals.

The processes include; dropping wooden sticks onto a page and spray painting over where they land, rolling inks over a sheet using batteries or extending and emphasising subconscious mark making with coloured tape.
From a multitude of studies I selected four which I found to be the most representative of the variety of work I had and grouped them together in a grid to allow for them to be compared and juxtaposed.
