MSA Stage 4 School of Architecture
Korell Llaudes
Hi, this is my first year at the GSA. I have used this year to bring all my previous experience into this years projects, which have been embraced by the school. Having experienced the teaching methods at GSA, next year I will be braver with my design and more radical. Look forward to what next year brings!
Urban Housing – Thornwood Quadrant Development
Thornwood lacks intentional public spaces which are important to developing a sense of community and promoting sociability amongst the residents. Instead Thornwood shows division through social hierarchy and unwelcoming edge conditions such as; inactive spaces, hard boundaries and unmaintained land.
From group research, an effective way to enhance the public realm is by increasing the amount of community based green spaces through improving pre-existing land and pedestrianising unnecessary roads. By breaking down the physical barriers that divide the community it will create an opportunity for social interaction as well as build relationships between the different types of housing that live together in the area. By focusing on the issues found and creating parks, retail opportunities and public allotments, create a healthy environment for all who live there. Implementing these changes could create several pockets of social spaces throughout which would bring the residents together and therefore provide the community the opportunity to live in agreement.
Thornwood in the West End of Glasgow city. My urban housing retrofit project is on top of a hill, which has the advantage of views and creating a heart for the community. The idea of my proposal is to create a relationship between the varied typologies as way to create a hierarchal shift and minimise the division in the area.
Urban Building – Thornwood Making
Thornwood lacks identity and is quite disconnected socially. This urban building will bring about collaboration, boosting social interactions/engaments. Relating back to the industrial history of the area and how many ship builders used to live and work near here. I will be proposing a exhibition for sculptor with studio spaces for making ‘stuff’. The building will aim to be integrated into the landscape and more welcoming to the public (south) and residents (north).
As a way to drive creativity and engagment influenced from the ‘Clyde Built’ history, I propose a cultural building that teaches the skill of designing and making. I also propose a space that can exhibit this work showcasing the learnt skills in the area and wider talents. This would be a building(s) that teaches the community encoraging engagement and inclusivity, as well as be a landmark and identity for the area. This would have to work in conjunction with relandscaping the park to make a more welcoming and utilised space.
