Lily Mechan

(she/her)

My project’s theme is florals, focusing on colour and the abstraction of marks and shapes. My work is influenced by the intricate and bold floral collections of designers such as Simone Rocha and Rodarte. Inspired by floral’s delicate washes of colour and bold marks, translated through drawing and colour analysis, I have explored embroidery on sheer bases. I have experimented with heavier base fabrics such as calico – treating it as a canvas and the beads like paint – and silk dupion – with the contrasting warps and wefts bolstering my own colour work. I have produced delicate, decorative samples, envisioned as accents on garments, while the beaded statement pieces are intended as one-off pieces of artwork. My samples were made using hand techniques and digital embroidery, and enhanced with beaded embellishments, promoting a return to more traditional embroidery techniques by removing the elements of mass production and ‘fast’ textiles.
