Lottie King
Lottie King is a multimedia artist based in Glasgow.
Her practice is based upon an exploration of narratives across a variety of media; With a present focus on the archetypal themes explored in Myths and ancient stories. She is particularly drawn to their tragic Pre-Raphaelite representations.
There is an emphasis on transformation with her work; She uses these classic stories and imagery as a starting point and reimagines them through distortion, fragmentation and abstraction allowing the original image to become hazy and tenuous, yet still retaining reference to figurative qualities. She seeks to play on the characteristics of memory and the evocative power of the ‘half forgotten tale’.
Working in a layered way, she seeks to build up a surface, but there is also a scratching away, revealing and excavating what has gone before. She is interested in the to and fro between the past and the present; Juxtaposing ‘what has been’ with the current and contemporary, allowing a resonance, correspondence and archetypal echo.
She enjoys the written word; the textual language of myth that retains such power. A single word is a placeholder to so much emotional information. She incorporates such words using visceral, instinctive mark making; scratching, rubbing and chiselling basic lines and curves to reveal a primal script.
Lottie navigates these narratives through a variety of means, including collage, print, acrylic paint, light projection and charcoal sketch.
