Orphans of the Void
‘Orphans of the Void’ is a moving image project inspired by Ursula Le Guin’s short story ‘Paradises Lost’. It is set on a multi-generational spaceship designed for a very long journey from Earth to a new habitable planet. The journey is so long that the original crew will not live to see the destination. Instead, their children, grandchildren, and future generations will continue the mission until the spaceship finally arrives. The story is told from the point of view of someone in the 5th generation. These citizens/orphans don’t have any tangible connection or living memory of Earth. Nature, cultures and history have been lost to time and distance. In this project I explore their disconnection and separation from the source of our lives.
