Malcolm Allan (He/him)

I am a Glasgow-based image maker, my work consists of photographic observations of my own surroundings, whether that manifests in urban landscapes, portraiture or otherwise. Conceptually, projects can range from having a politicised basis to being more informed by innate aesthetic observations.

‘Along The Periphery’

Most of my coursework this academic year has consisted of my self-directed project, ‘Along The Periphery’. This project has seen me research and document Glasgow’s peripheral ‘overspill’ housing schemes. This project, although having some political impetus is not necessarily about making an overt statement, rather I simply want to provide a window into a world that many (even some from Glasgow) are unaware of. Places and stories that are rarely shown or associated in contemporary representations with what it means to be Glaswegian, particularly as the city has shed much of its working-class identity to become a more ‘cultural’ or touristic destination. I seek to address this imbalance by documenting the places along the periphery, both geographic and in perceived importance.

‘An-Dràsta’

An-dràsta (present, now) is a very brief project I undertook as a lighter and less considered creative outlet for observations I made whilst travelling to various sites for my much more significant project Along The Periphery. In this work I simply wanted to allow myself to create more intuitively and freely, not limiting myself in the pursuit of ‘perfect’ or high-definition images.
