School of Simulation & Visualisation Sound for the Moving Image

Megan Connolly (She/They)

Megan is a sound practitioner, musician, and animator with a lifelong love for comedy and the lighter side of life. She has a keen interest in what makes us tick, human relationship, alongside a passion for nature and preservation. She has travelled and worked in hundreds of festivals worldwide for the past decade. During this time, she has expanded her sights to understand the importance of community and the happiness that art and live music brings. She plays in a band, BIN JUICE, that are known for their tongue-in-cheek lyrics and playful stage presence.

Megan uses her audio-visual work to provide some rest bite from the doom and gloom of the current climate. When creating her own art, it’s the creative process itself that brings her inspiration. She may have an idea of her final work/outcome, but she doesn’t search for a specific subject or topic, she lets her ideas flow during the working process bringing sometimes unexpected outcomes. Her animation project “Hallouminati” takes a light-hearted look at the chaos of cults and the consequences of not questioning the media we all consume, highlighting the importance of your autonomy and agency in the current day.

Her work is heavily influenced by technology. She enjoys creating the illusion of an imaginary world and making it possible for everybody to participate. The mind may be transported to another universe through art and sound that are not possible in reality. She considers herself a creator who also likes doing physical arts like pottery and painting.
Her animation, consequently, draws inspiration from many fields of visual creation.

During her time at the GSA, she has produced other satirical works such as “The Gauntlet of Adulthood”, where she developed a game in Unity where the player is in a continuous monotonous spiral, and tries avoiding the more significant problems of life – such as debt and watching the news.
She has also shown her love for nature and filmmaking by showcasing the beauty of Scotland in the depths of winter in a documentary film, “An Abhainn”, meaning the river in Gaelic. With our natural world ever changing she loves to explore and articulate the beauty through picture of these ethereal and precious places.

Prior to her time at GSA, she spent two years at Glasgow Kelvin College learning the fundamentals of studio recording, live sound and post-production audio.
Throughout her time at Glasgow School of Art, she has developed various technical skills, from videography skills, video and audio editing/mixing to game development in Unity. She is also self-taught the entire Adobe suite to produce the animation.

Now as a multidisciplinary artist, Megan uses her technical skills in sound and vision to create work and collaborate with other artists, delving into other disciplines where possible to add to her skill set.
