Molly Hooper (she/her)

My practice is driven by my love of fun and slightly odd ideas and of creating playful work. I enjoy being eclectic with my research which emerges from niche aspects of popular culture. My work this year has mainly explored narratives that I find exciting, through various mediums like textiles, coding and visual play.

For the love of Guildo

Is a project to memorialise Guildo Horn’s ridiculous but beautiful Eurovision performance for Germany in 1998. From a fan perspective my cloak acts as a shrine to Guildo, who I argue is the embodiment of all Eurovision performers, even though he only came in seventh place.

Tooth loss

Through teeth grinding, a romantic mishap, a dentist extraction, a sporting injury, and rotting gums five teeth were lost from this mouth. This project began with my interest in teeth – our collective fears of tooth loss, the dentist and the oral illusions our tongues make – and visualises a series of fictitious tooth losses from inside the mouth, which I then coded.

Talking out their arses

A publication of political arse tattoos which symbolise a series of electoral pledges made by politicians that never came to fruition.

Facebook Gospel

Facebook Gospel looks at the way the boomer generation often treat Facebook ‘as gospel’ and the role reversal of being told not to trust what you read on the internet, by elevating Minions memes to the level of biblical ephemera. The project draws on the visual language of religious tracts to convey the innocence and joy of these seemingly banal memes. We made the poster at a large scale in the caseroom, before reproducing and redistributing it in public as an A5 pamphlet, in keeping with the idea of reposting on social media.

Go piss

Go piss is a collaborative publication which explores the public/private nature of toilets through celebrity gossip culture. Using visual play, we exaggerated a series of stories to create a salacious narrative borrowed from gossip magazines and the golden age of paparazzi. The materiality of the book reflects the space of the bathroom, taking inspiration from loo roll and notes written across toilet cubicles.

Flash Sheet (exhibition identity)

Identity design for the Communication Design Y4 work in progress show. We wanted to avoid the design feeling stuffy and boring (which we felt was a misconception about Com Des), instead aiming to highlight the personality of the course and the fun of experimentation. We decided on the theme of temporary tattoos as a way of looking at the ephemeral nature of a WIP show compared to the permanence of degree show.
