“O burnie with the glass-white shiver, Singing over stone” Nan Shepherd, In The Cairngorms (1934)
Emerging from an instinctive draw towards nature, my work often gravitates towards the exploration of the essence of calm, serenity, and earthiness that these landscapes exude. ‘Water Flutes: An Elemental Motet’ aims to create an accessible interpretation of a natural space within an internal setting, while also providing a chance for the audience to reconnect with their innate senses.
Created by layering the earthy sounds made by my ceramic water flutes with natural soundscapes taken from the water sources these flutes were played in, this work aspires to produce a balanced combination of frequencies that resonate with our very being. Inspired by the ancient connotations of music in relation to ceramics, I am interested in how one might bend the boundaries of conventional sound-making and by what means certain sounds, pitches or frequencies can positively impact the viewer.
Within this created space where the senses are delicately heightened, the audience are not merely observers but active participants, enveloped in an experience that cultivates a harmonious connection with the world we inhabit.
