Quentin Borland
My name is Quentin Borland, I am an artist and designer. My work tends to centre around specific organic motifs; recently that motif has been the dandelion due to its simple coloration, variation in its stages of growth, its easily identifiable characteristics such as its serrated leaves, and its yellow and seed white blooms. I also find the dandelion to be a rather noble flower, for its multitudes of health benefits and its importance in the ecosystem. With this motif, and the addition of a matching colour pallet in mind, I create various objects and artworks that depict some aspect of the motif and shared pallet; creating a unity between my artworks despite the fact my work tends to be different both craft and material wise. I specialise in various forms of craft such as painting, printmaking, and textile works. The use of these various methods and materials result in the creation of artworks and items such as hand painted patterned wallpaper as well as furniture, and hand embroidered design works.
Much of my work is created to exist within a domestic environment. This is due to the fact that the home is a major inspiration for my work. The Home is a location that is meant to serve a functional but also an emotional purpose. It is where you nourish, clean, and rest yourself. It is a place where you can take reprieve and comfort from the outside world. It is ideally a place that is safe and one you enjoy being in. The home is a rather large aspect of my life, and one of my long term goals in life is to create a beautiful, warm, and comforting home for myself. I utilise my art as an outlet to express this desire. Thus resulting in the creation of domestic centric artworks. Which also affects how I present them.
When showcasing my artwork publicly, I focus on creating an installation that is manufactured to resemble a domestic setting. This is to not only complement and emphasize the domestic nature of my work, but also by creating this type of environment I hope to capture the essence of the home; ideally bringing forth the atmosphere associated with that of a comfortable and inviting home.
