The Old Earth Cantos
Using images from both Country Life, published in the late 19th and early 20th century, as well as images from BBC Science Focus, I’ve made a series of collaged landscapes that exist on a selection of found windows. The landscapes tell the story of humanities technological progress over the last one hundred years as well as looking onward, one hundred years into the future. The windows allow the viewer to look beyond the landscapes in front of them, incorporating the present moment into the work and the timeline that is being depicted. The work was born of a love of Sci-fi and the age old trope of technology advancing and replacing a time of innocence. The work isn’t meant to represent every massive lifestyle and technological change that we will see or have seen occur across the 200 year time span we currently sit in the middle of. Instead I wanted to depict these themes as part of a series of fair-tale landscapes in which time is not linear but folded over on its self, moments existing all at once on the same plane.
