Xueying Zhang

(she/her)

Xueying is a multimedia artist, but she also paints. Her recent practice is mostly related to video, mostly discussing time, the past, and the hidden self. Xueying is part of a duo with Jing at the same time, a performance-based art practice that mostly draws on Eastern cultural contexts. Their themes are mostly related to the dismantling of binary oppositions and post-colonialism.

The Emperor of the Southern Sea was Shu, the Emperor of the Northern Sea was Hu, and the Emperor of the Central region was Hun Dun. Shu and Hu would often meet in the land of Hun Dun, who always treated them very well. Shu and Hu decided to repay Hun Dun’s kindness, they said, ‘All beings have seven apertures to see, hear, eat, and breathe, but this being alone does not have them. Let’s try to bore some into it.’ Each day they bored one more hole. On the seventh day Hun Dun died.

Projector me

Deleuze proposed that the mechanical assembly of the human brain and the film projector results in a non-parallel evolution between humans and machines. Similarly, when people watch, they mechanically assemble with the projector through the screen as a medium. The projector is a very special imaging device that creates images with light, existing between reality and illusion. When you really dissect it and stare at its essence, it is merely a beam of light. Then, what is this light? And what are you?

The lighter in the big hand emits light projected by the projector, a fire that can scorch you if you get too close.

This work was created in 2023 by the two-artist duo D u e (Xueying&Jing) and was showed in Hamburg, Germany.

Children immersed in the childish game of cat’s cradle engage in meaningless contests within a designated area. The game is a basic need and instinct in childhood, and also a way for humans to establish socio-political relationships with the world. Two characters face each other, each bound by strict rules and limitations. Through the game of cat’s cradle, they continuously engage in strategic play, as if trapped in a kind of obsession. Meanwhile, through countless repetitions and a system of counting wins, they encroach upon each other’s living space; red signifies traces and brands. However, the absurdity of this conflict and struggle is that it yields no spoils of universal significance. The structural form of the game is its own meaning. Cat’s cradle attempts to reveal those things that are suppressed and hidden behind the formation of culture, those overlooked and unseen elements.
