Zeena Wright-Al Tai

(she/her)

Zeena Wright-Al Tai was born in 1996, New Jersey, USA, to a Welsh mom and Iraqi dad. She speaks neither Arabic nor Welsh, but understands Telenovelas. She is a queer draw-er, community arts coordinator, set-designer, and textile artist working in Glasgow and London. Before moving to Glasgow for the MFA, Wright-Al Tai was a learning and community arts coordinator at the Camden Art Centre in London. Wright Al Tai holds an AA degree in Fine Art and Textiles from Parsons School of Design and a 1:1 BA Honours degree in Fine Art Painting from University of the Arts London: Wimbledon College of Art.

Wright-Al Tai’s mixed-media practice explores themes of solitude, folklore, surrealism, body-horror, and neo-colonialism of land and bodies. From tales of the Mesopotamian demoness Lamashtu to Angela Carter’s dark heroines, Wright-Al Tai references both ancient and contemporary strands of folklore to construct sublime worlds in which femme and queer figures luxuriate in nature. She occasionally delves into the sensory experiences of psychosis and hypomania – a nod toward her lived experience with Bipolar Disorder. Her preferred mediums of needlework and installation beckons spectators to enter her constructed worlds – urging them to let go of ‘reality’ and embrace a fantastical parallel universe.
