Communication Design School of Design

Arran Keir

During this academic year, I have mainly focused on self-directed projects as part of my coursework. These projects include explorations into Java coding, the creation of a tool utilizing ASCII software, and a complete rebranding for refuweegee, a local Glasgow charity. The focal point of my efforts has been ‘Hidden in plain sight’ a typographic examination of how men express their emotions – what men say contrasted to how they might feel. I was drawn to the typographic possibilities of steganographic strategies – the graphic and communicative tricks of saying two opposite things at the same time.

For the Design History and Theory component part of my degree, I documented and reflected on the ‘Hidden in plain sight’ project. The critical journal analysed my work relating to the growing issue of male depression and explored the suppression of emotions within Scottish culture. Through my creative thinking, this allowed me to consider the vulnerability of the subject matter, comparing my input to other people. It was this critique that shaped my work to follow, leading to a focus on highlighting the struggles that men face.

ASCII Tool

ASCII art refers to images that are created using ASCII text characters. The images are created by either converting an existing image to ASCII characters by hand or starting from scratch and using the characters to create a decent approximation of something.

After exploring and experimenting with ASCII code I created a tool where the user can input their own photos and change the variables including the size of X and Y tiles, text size, background colour, character colour, typeface and character set to create and endless production of image making.

Refuweegee Rebrand

Refuweegee is a Glasgow-based community-led charity that helps refugees who have arrived in Glasgow with a warm welcome. They create welcome packs full of essentials and deliver them to the less fortunate.

In this development, I created a rebrand crafting a new punchy logo and strong visual identity that represents the values of the organization.

Along The Periphery

‘Along The Periphery’ is the title of the latest editorial book I have designed. I collaborated with Malcolm Allan from fourth-year photography to design and produce this 52-page publication showcasing the six-month photographic investigation that saw him research and document Glasgow’s peripheral ‘overspill’ housing schemes.

This collection, although having some political impetus is not necessarily about making an overt statement, rather he simply wants to provide a window into a world that many (even some from Glasgow) are unaware of.
