Finn Roberts
(he/Him)
My practice is centred around performances, installations and video. Informed by my research of Futurism and Fluxus, I am fascinated by the mundane yet absurd nature of ordinary actions, which develops into contemporary performance.
My performances often feature everyday objects that I will manipulate to perform with in an absurd fashion. My practice involves an importance of site specificity, and my performances are created with a strong sense of humour and pathos. A key thread throughout all my work is the involvement of labour and repeating tasks to completion in a variety of forms.
My dyslexia has led me to explore the limitations, frustrations and nonsensical aspects of the written word, which can be visible throughout my practice. My work often features text-based battles alongside performances inspired by this language. My use of gentle humour aims to elevate the repetitive nature of everyday life that are sometimes overlooked, the realises itself in forms of characters such as: the janitor, technician, door-to-door salesman and you.
Am I Just making Wallpaper
Am I Just Making Wallpaper is an installation and performance based around repetitive actions, instructions and the absurdity of everyday life. The installation includes 4 recorded performances that display a simple action repeated over and over with no conclusion. These films are then paired with an installation and performances, shining a light on the nuances of the everyday and the never-ending nature of certain activities. The performance lasts approximately 15 minutes. The performance and installation both contain a book filled with instructions, which have inspired both the 4 films and the performance.
White Cube On Wheels
white Cube on Wheels is an ongoing performance project centred on moving a white cube gallery to different locations and settings. The gallery made by me was wheeled across Glasgow for its inaugural outing, which saw it on busy streets, bridges, outside closed galleries and in parks. The Gallery not only moved locations but also context with works being shifted around in different locations, as well as allowing nature to become ready-made works such as trees, sticks and beer kegs. The project goal is to showcase a wide range of works outside of the traditional limitations of the white cube gallery and place it in a more interesting and accessible environment
