Yafei Liu
(She/They/yafei)
My work begins with things that are felt before they can be clearly named.
Through painting and lithography, I follow marks, surfaces, and traces as they appear, disappear, and change. Forms are not fixed in my work; they remain open, uncertain, and in motion. I am interested in the moment when an image almost becomes recognisable, but slips away again.
Making is a way of thinking for me. Each layer, pressure, pause, and gesture changes the work as it develops. The work becomes a somewhere where feeling can gather and unfold through process and material.
In my current work, this movement extends into space. Paintings, lithographs, voids, and spatial conditions become part of the work itself. I am interested in how movement, distance, and moments of pause can shift the experience of the work.
My practice holds space for something internal that cannot fully settle into form, something that moves from within, remains partly unseen, and continues to shift as it is encountered.
