Immersive Systems Design – 3D Modelling Innovation & Technology

Alexandru Rusu

I am a visual storyteller and both a traditional and digital artist, with a multidisciplinary practice rooted in the worlds of hard surface and organic 3D modeling, visual effects (VFX), and immersive technology. My creative process often bridges the gap between the tangible and the virtual, allowing me to craft detailed, narrative-driven visuals that engage audiences across mediums. A central theme in my work is the human figure—not just as a form, but as a symbol of identity, vulnerability, and resilience—frequently portrayed in either natural environments or juxtaposed with technology to explore the evolving relationship between the body and the digital realm. In addition to these visual explorations, I am deeply interested in the portrayal of emotional complexity.

Historical figure character reconstruction: Dante Alighieri

Durante di Alighiero degli Alighieri, commonly known as Dante, was an Italian philosopher, poet, and writer. His masterpiece, The Divine Comedy, is widely regarded as one of the most important literary works of the Middle Ages and the most significant piece ever written in the Italian language. Like many of his Florentine contemporaries, Dante was deeply involved in the political life of his city, which was torn by the conflict between the Guelphs and Ghibellines. To support his political ambitions, he joined the Guild of Physicians and Apothecaries—a strategic move that reflected the close ties between philosophy, medicine, and the literary world, as apothecaries also served as booksellers. Membership in the guild granted him eligibility for public office, and over the years, he held several political positions during a period of intense civic unrest. Ultimately, Dante was exiled by the Black Guelphs on charges of treachery. It was likely during this period of exile that he began composing The Divine Comedy.

I chose this studio project because of my deep passion for history, particularly the rich cultural and intellectual legacy of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Dante Alighieri has long fascinated me, not only as one of Italy’s greatest literary figures but also as a complex political thinker navigating the turbulent Florentine society of his time. Working on this reconstruction felt especially timely, as it aligns with the recent 700th anniversary of Dante’s death—a milestone that reawakened interest in his life and work.

The aim of this project was to create a historically grounded 3D character reconstruction of Dante Alighieri, capturing the poet’s visual and cultural identity through a synthesis of his physical attributes, wardrobe, and the social markers of his era. This reconstruction intends to balance artistic fidelity with historical accuracy, contextualizing Dante as both a renowned poet and an influential political figure in 13th-14th century Florence.

To achieve a likeness I utilised diverse sources, including morphological data from Dante’s funerary mask and reconstructed skull, Renaissance and medieval
portraits, and literary descriptions by contemporaries like Boccaccio and Villani. Each source provides insight into Dante’s physical traits, including his distinctive aquiline nose, dark hair, and thoughtful countenance.

How do variable levels of visual detail in VFX impact emotional engagement in a virtual cinematic environment?

This dissertation project investigated the impact of varying levels of visual detail in visual effects (VFX) on emotional engagement within virtual cinematic environments. As immersive technology continues to advance and the demand for emotionally resonant virtual experiences grows, understanding the relationship between visual fidelity and audience engagement becomes increasingly significant. The research study examined how different degrees of visual detail ranging from hyper-realistic to minimalistic representations influence viewer responses, including emotional intensity, immersion, and perception of narrative elements.

The objective was to create two distinct animations in Blender – one realistic and one stylised, featuring complex emotional targets. This year I tried to have a sense of continuity with the first semester, so I decided to base the story on Dante’s Divine Comedy and used my 3D character model reconstruction of the historical figure.

The character has a linear motion on a plane, going from left to right, following the sequence: Obscure forest, Gate of Inferno, River of Blood, Frozen lake Cocytus. The obscure forest is a pivotal symbolic element. It represents Dante’s moral and spiritual crisis, his feeling lost and astray in his life’s journey at a point midway through his life.

The results of the study showed that the emotional impact of VFX within a virtual cinematic environment is intricately tied to both the level of visual detail and the coherence between visual style and narrative intent. While highly realistic effects were often associated with stronger immersive experiences and heightened emotional responses, stylised approaches proved equally powerful when thoughtfully integrated with the story’s thematic and emotional arcs. These findings affirm prior research suggesting that realism and stylisation serve different, yet equally valuable, roles in audience engagement.
