Alice Elizabeth Baker

(she/her)

I have explored my own interest in reimagining florals and natural forms in an illustrative way. I have been observing the process of watching flowers wither away and die, this shift in shape and colour was visually interesting, inspiring a theme of reworking my primary images by capturing this transformation. Spiritually flowers hold significance and meaning, having a language of their own, i imagined this project as creating my own language of florals, telling a story through a combination of illustration and embroidery. I believe the best way to express this theme is through colour, allowing me to explore rich tones, and replicating movement through this study. Using Silk threads to create depth in colour and explore movement through darker and lighter tones mixed with fabric manipulation techniques such as pleating and smocking. Couching down layers of thread building up texture and tones, layering patterns created from the digital embroidery machine exploring shape and placement. Working on free-flowing fabrics such as organza and organdie to replicate further movement inspired by my primary images. I Produced fashion outcomes inspired by lace-like patterns and abstract designs styled as sleeves or to add to existing garments, layering over as a body piece or being used as a larger accessory, Expressive and bold one-off pieces. The pieces can be styled in several different ways creating versatile options to experiment with through own personal style.
