Anna Bologna

Driven by the emotional experience and my dreams of connection, my work often includes themes of one’s inner world and collectivity. I am interested in practicing slowness in analogue ways of making and in the stages of experimentation, following their motions and letting them inform my exploration of ideas and the ways I choose to communicate them. My illustrative and printmaking practice exist separately and interdependently with multi-media projects, and are a core element of my process. My drawings are intuitive, expressive and minimal, with a large focus on the mark itself.

This year I dedicated the majority of my time to ‘Quintetto’, a project on collective sound making and listening, for which I built five imagined musical instruments, as well as making a publication. The project culminated in the first live improvised community performance on 23rd April 2025, which is partly documented in a video.

Quintetto

Building on the knowledge from my Creative Research on Deep Listening, I designed and built five instruments from my imagination, that have the goal of allowing for inner listening: Piedone, Grande Rotondo, Narici, La Nocca, La Pancia. The instruments are inspired by techniques to anchor oneself for presence: finding gravity, the centreline, breathing, touch points, the belly area.

I aimed to create objects with visual insterest that are engaging to interact with and make interesting sounds. I set out to create instruments that exist outside of traditional categories of Western music in terms of shapes, scales and classification, in an attempt to make space for unrestricted play: I hope for this state of freedom to allow the musician’s attention to naturally fall to the present moment, for the sound making to awaken curiosity and for the shapes and sounds of the instruments to inspire connection to the body.

Whilst each instrument has its own quality, their shapes and sounds were conceived in a group of five. With this project it was my aim to build a collaborative, collective space, where sound making together creates a chance to listen. With these ideas in mind, I set up the first improvised performance with the five instruments, which were played by members of a community group I am a part of that discusses and practices mindfulness. We spent an hour together beforehand doing a workshop with group meditations and exercises to get familiar with the instruments. The performance and workshop were recorded and a short video encapsulates the event. ‘Quintetto’ is also the title of a publication that retells the project, the ideas behind it and its stages in printed form.

Quintetto - Sound machines for collective listening and play

Drawing visual inspiration from archival catalogues and experimental publications, this book includes an eclectic and dynamic combination of drawings from the developmental stages of the project as well as the journey of each instrument from raw material to finished object, and photographic documentation in the setting of the performance they were built for.

This year I also developed some poster designs. The one below is for the film ‘Happy as Lazzaro’ (2018) by Alice Rohrwacher and is a two layer screenprint.

Music Concrete performance poster

This poster was designed for a live performance in Glasgow by French music concrete composers Lionel Marchetti and Anouk Genthon. The poster draws inspiration from other designs for performances and lectures from the Glasgow School of Art Archives.
