Cerys Lily Martin

(she/her)

My work explores the complex and often uncomfortable relationship between humans and animals. I am interested in how animals are represented and used — both in the real world and in popular culture — and how these portrayals reflect, distort, or obscure our understanding of them.

Through my practice, I examine the ways in which animals are commercialized, commodified, and fictionalized, especially within entertainment and advertising. Popular culture often relies on animal characters to express human emotions, conflicts, or moral lessons. However, this can flatten or erase the actual lives and experiences of animals themselves. My work highlights this contradiction: the more we use animals to explore human truths, the more we risk hiding the truths of the animal kingdom.

My sustained engagement with the subject of animal representation pushes me to question what it means to truly see and acknowledge another species. I’m drawn to the materiality of the work: the tactile, visceral presence of the materials I use becomes a way of reconnecting with the physicality of animals, as opposed to connecting only with their symbolic or cartoon versions.

I often work instinctively and with a raw, intuitive approach. I am less interested in polished realism and more concerned with emotional honesty, capturingsomething of the discomfort, vulnerability, and imbalance in our shared existence with animals, while using humour to engage my audience.
