Coraline(Yuting) Chen

Coraline’s practice revolves around her inner world of dreams and memories often manifesting within dream-like sky or oceanic landscapes. Chen transforms her life experiences, realised her in dreams, through her artistic expression. Through which, she encompasses emotions and memories hidden deep within her heart, imaginings about the soul and time, and buried secrets. She believes that creation is a way to express oneself- an outlet for emotions. She channels such belief through her use of mixed media materials and technique. For Chen, such material is assembled when walking out of the city; branches and shells embed into compositions in her studio. Her works might become oil, ink or handmade paper. Pigment paintings on fabric, layered glues or thin metal hand-sculpted pieces, often stitched together as one. She habitually relies on the layering of different materials to enrich the texture of her paintings. For example, you can often see mixtures of plaster, clay, sand, and paint applied over bases made of different types of paper. Sometimes she might use oil to create a transparent effect by layering it on the paper. Through such, the artist hopes that she might awaken emotions that exist in everyone’s heart but are often hidden and carefully guarded, allowing viewers to experience emotional release or comfort while viewing her practice. Ultimately, Chen invites the viewer into her minds’ eye.
