Dawn Carol Martin
(She/her)
My interdisciplinary practice, based on the west coast of Scotland, explores national identity through the landscape of Scotland. My work is informed by an interest in the mystery surrounding the Picts, early settlers who ruled the land for centuries yet remain largely lost to time, their presence surviving primarily through visual artefacts. Alongside this, my research into Scottish mythology and symbolic forms provides a means of exploring how stories, belief systems, and visual languages are embedded within the land.
Ceramics plays a central role within my practice, chosen for its position between permanence and erosion. Clay responds to touch and time, allowing the material to embody Scotland’s forgotten histories while evoking a sense of inherited memory. Through the use of mythological symbols and material processes, reflects on the energy between land, history, and identity. My research responds to how this energy is passed through objects to materials.
Carved in Silence
The installation explores collective memory, folklore, and cultural inheritance, creating an atmospheric environment that encourages embodied encounters. It examines the relationship between humans, animals, and landscape through references to Scottish mythology and ancient forms of mark-making.
Using both natural and traditional materials are important to my practice. Ceramics has strong assoications to the earth, archaeology and material preservation across time. I am interested in how materials can hold traces of touch and process that feel that they carry memory and ancient history.Through the use of mythological symbols and material processes, reflects on the energy between land, history, and identity.
The installation of works are arranged to be experienced collectively, creating an environment where meaning is shaped through their relationships to each other and to the surrounding space.
The ‘wall heads’ are arranged to suggest presence and awareness, encouraging a quiet exchange that is not understood through modern human language, but through perception, instinct, and embodied experience.
Entering by passing through the hanging tapestries acting as a threshold, viewers are invited to navigate the installation through quiet and attentive observation, where meaning unfolds gradually through movement, spatial relationships, and sensory awareness.
