Emily Lavery
(She/Her)
Glasgow based.
I started my journey into interior design in 2022 when I joined Glasgow School of Art from high school.
Within my four years here I have been able to grow and developed from each project we have been given.
For my final project this year, I wanted to create a space that holds different elements of its surroundings while introducing new aspects.
So throughout each step of this project I have challenged myself and explored even more within this design.
I am super excited to enter the interior design world and cannot wait to keep exploring new horizons and seeing how this world evolves.
A PRIVATE PLATE
My Extending design project is ‘A Private Plate’
Exploring within my main project of the Hillhead Resort & Spa, I knew I wanted to design an item that could be used throughout each space eg Living space, the bar area and the spa space, so to do so I chose create personalised plates that could be altered to guests ideas eg birthdays….
By creating my own plates for this space it creates a more personal touch.
To do so I took inspiration from plates found within the Botanic greens which is a near by park, By creating designs that showcase these plants, flowers and herbs locally produced within the gardens onto these plates I have been able to create a subtile but unique design.
Throughout this project I have explored the creation of plates through different techniques, plate designs and pricing within budgets.

MATERIALS
PLANS
P R I V A T E B A R
Creating a space which allows for free flow around each smaller table, a unique bar that can hold classes as well as having an secluded event space for hosts when needed.
Basement space, within tables these are mostly candle lit to create a duller atmos- phere while allowing a glow to space.
For the bar space the space located be- hind bar is all back lit to focus on drinks on offer while having overhead simple lighting above bar for workers to see.
Within event space long overhead strip lights are installed which can be colour changed to be more fitting to guests.
Stairs are lit from sides for safety.
L I V I N G S P A C E
Creating a space where guests can be taking part in different activities while in th same space allows for free flow, doesn’t separate the house/ groups and allows us as designers to introduces other spaces such as offices, a reading room and more storage.
Ground floor, for living space there is a large main chandelier as a centre piece, within kitchen there is overhead lighting with cool lights for safety and to have space more a chilled and not warmth feeling space.
within other spaces there is standard overhead lighting.
Green space is outdoor fairy lights to allow guests to be out at night and creates a cozy space. Within spa space it is all overhead installed lighting for safety.
S L E E P I N G S P A C E
Creating a more luxury sleeping spaces to hold up to 12 guests per stay, allowing room for movement around each space as well as an w/c for each guest within each room.
Level one;
This floor is more single room lighting which are bed side table lights with a warm light installed as well as an over head cool installed light to allow guests to have their preferred prefrence.
Within hall space there is wall spot lights installed
to allow light both up and down.
And for void space this space is lt with natural light from glass pannels on roof, with small spot lights on walls for night time.
SECTIONS & JUNCTIONS
Through each floor there will underfloor heating, i have chosen to do this as
1. More even & comfortable heat
Unlike radiators that create hot spots, underfloor systems spread warmth across the entire floor. This works through radiant heat transfer, so the heat rises gently and evenly, making the room feel consistently warm.
2. Energy efficiency
Underfloor heating runs at lower temperatures than traditional radiators while delivering the same com- fort. Because of this, it pairs well with efficient systems like heat pumps, potentially lowering energy bills over time.
3. Saves space and improves design
No bulky radiators allows me more freedom for furniture placement and a cleaner look
4. Better air quality
Radiators circulate air and dust when they heat up. Underfloor heating produces less air movement, which can help people sensitive to dust or allergens.
5. Works well with modern flooring
It’s particularly effective with tile, wood or stone floors
6. Low maintenance and long lifespan
Once installed systems tend to be reliable and require minimal upkeep.
New section of spa, from east side.
This section is to clarify the floor levels of the extra building. As this building is actually located lower than main building i have proposed to have this entrance be more levelled with main site as this would be more suitable to have a swimming pool located.
To also include another level within the space i have proposed to have a higher and slanted roof to allow this floor to work efficiently. As well as introducing more roof windows to allow flow of natural light into space and by having a slanted roof it still allows privacy into space for guests

THE BAR SPACE
BASEMENT
THE BAR SPACE
First, it creates a strong sense of exclusivity. When guests are in a private resort, they’re already expecting something more intimate than a public venue. A bar reinforces that feeling that it’s “their” space, not some- where others could walk into.
Also, This space becomes a social hub. Even in quiet resorts, people tend to gather around a bar. It gives guests a low-pressure way to start conversations, or just enjoy some back- ground energy without committing to a full event or activity.
This resort hosts private groups (like wed- dings or corporate retreats), the bar could often becomes the main point for informal bonding.
From a design perspective, it’s a chance to shape the atmosphere differently as this is
a more darker and close feeling space com- pared to other floors such as level one where the atmosphere is more open and airy.
Aswell as the practical upside of keeping guests on-site longer. If guests don’t need
to leave for nightlife or drinks such as Asht- on lane, they’re more likely to stay engaged with the resort by spending more time there, and feel that the experience is complete without outside options.
Finally, a bar can act as a flexible event space. It can host masterclassrs, private parties, or themed nights without needing a separate venue. That adaptability makes it especially valuable in a private resort setting where everything is meant to feel curated and cohesive.
THE LIVING SPACE
GROUND FLOOR
THE LIVING SPACE
The living and kitchen spaces in a private resort do a lot more than just the functional roles,
they shape how people actually ex- perience the stay.
The biggest advantage is the feeling of “home, but better.” A designed liv- ing area gives guests somewhere to settle in, not just pass through like a hotel lobby.
Comfortable seating, open layouts, and good indoor flow lets people relax on their own terms whether that’s a group conversations, or late at night lounging.
The kitchen adds another layer that you don’t get in most hospitality settings. Guests can eat when they want, cook what they like, without being tied to restaurant hours. For families or groups, this is huge as it removes a locked in style and makes the stay feel more personal and flexible.
Together, these spaces become the social core of the resort. Just like a bar draws people in, a shared living area encourages natural interaction It’s especially valuable for group bookings like retreats, celebrations, or multi-family trips where connec- tion is the main goal, as it craetes moments even when theyre cooking together, sharing meals, playing games, or just hanging out.
THE SLEEPING SPACE
THE SLEEPING SPACE
The biggest advantage is privacy and con- trol. Unlike standard hotels, sleeping areas in a private resort are designed so guests feel completely undisturbed by random oth- ers in the shared space their own space and they know the others guests staying which helps feel more secure .
That sense of retreat is often the main reason people choose a private resort in the first place
flexibility in how spaces are configured. Pri- vate resorts can cater to couples, families, or larger groups by mixing room types eg master suites, twin rooms, interconnected spaces, or even standalone units. That ad- aptability makes the experience feel tailored rather than one-size-fits-all.
By having a main room this allows guests who are celebrating have this space as its more important to said person.
Aswell as having a room that can be changed by curtains to open space for big- ger groups eg getting ready or a morning catchup.
Another big upside is the connection to the surroundings.
Sleeping spaces can be designed to high- light views, natural light and having large windows that bring the outside in. That kind of design turns a basic function into a mem- orable part of the stay.
Within this space, the bedroom isn’t just where people crash, it’s a personal sanctuary,
A space to recharge.
THE SPA SPACE
For the spa space my main aspect is to keep everything clean.
With this in mind i knew within the swimming space this would be very minimal and relaxing
for guests, by having overhead warmer toned lighting and a warmer toned interior, this space would become more
a quiet space compared to the usual loud swimming spaces surrounding.
While upstairs by keeping these tones but adjust- ing the lighting a cooler toned it creates a more cleaner atmos- phere while
still relaxing by having softer textures and more curves.
This is to allow guests to step away fro the busy outside world and into a quiet relaxing and comforting space catered to them.
Easy to clean and slip proof materials for safety.
By also connecting this to my extending design to create a full circle moment, I plan on using locally sourced and grown plants and herbs within this space for decor, products and treatments. By doing this I will be giving back to the community and being more sustainable.
FINAL MODEL
53 Cresswell st, The Hillhead Resort & spa
Within my final model, this is a 1:50 section through the centre of my site….
I have chosen to create a section model to be able to focus more on smaller details and a heavy focus on the textures within the interior.
I have also created the spa as a section from the east side to also focus on texture, colour and flow through both spaces.
