Emma ‘alba’ Scarlett

Emma Scarlett (born Feb 1985, Scotland) is a contemporary artist based in Glasgow. Through printmaking, painting, sculpture and installation Emma explores the myriad narratives held within domestic spaces. As an artist and mother Emma illuminates the value, legacy and beauty in the unseen labour, care and time spent in often undervalued locations. From the kitchen to the playpark and the journeys in between, observing the world in all its gritty glory.
With a strong environmental imperative Emma has embedded sustainability into her research, life and art practice. Gathering and repurposing materials to build compositions that pivot between painting and sculpture. With exquisite, methodical making, wool meets wood, plastic meets shredder, things are assembled to create the unexpected.
Emma accumulates photographic moments from her everyday; indoor and out. Also documenting her processes of assemblage. These images are merged in her printmaking practice, with a careful emphasis on detail, featuring a soft, colourful palette from nature and domestic life.
Inclusivity is an inherent methodology for Emma. She has made and curated work to challenge preconceptions and biases. She invites conversations, collaborations and opportunities to share knowledge.
Knitted Kitchen
Knitted Kitchen; knitting together the multifarious components of my lived experience as an artist and a mother.
A installation of kitchen cabinets woven with wool, assemblage, textiles and recycled plastic alongside a series of screen-prints relating to the installation. All the elements in the installation are made from salvaged and repurposed materials including the sink, the worktop, the frames for the prints and the wool for the weaving. My artistic process is centred around using materials that already exist, highlighting the many ways in which second hand objects and materials can be reimagined, promoting a positive legacy to counteract consumerism.
