Painting & Printmaking School of Fine Art
Freya Davies

As an artist, my practice is rooted in the joy of discovery, expression, and the vibrant interplay of colour and pattern. Through my paintings I explore the world of naive art, embracing the simplicity and spontaneity of the subject matter. My work allows for a sense of freedom and creativity which plays with the perception of form. Through painting ordinary objects and incorporating patterns and heightened colours, I aim to exaggerate their charm creating playfulness and wonder.
My mark making is very flexible as I allow the materials to interact with each other in ways that surprise me, encouraging discovery and play within each piece. This fluid approach to creation allows me to work intuitively, trusting the unfolding of each work while staying true to the essence of my practice. Through my depictions of interiors, observational drawings and geometric shapes, I approach each subject with an understanding of colour relationships, texture, and form. I try to elevate the mundane to the extraordinary by abstracting the scenes. My aim is not to replicate the scene, but instead to portray energy and character through the use of bright colours and simplified forms.
