James Ross

(He/Him)

As an illustrator, I attempt to create surreal vibrant imagery, balanced with darker more grounded themes. I am fascinated with the absurdity of everyday life, this year taking a particular interest in the strange and sinister nature of consumer culture.

Recently I have been working on a world building narrative project, set in a city built on the side of a giant Coca-Cola bottle. The narrative depicts the lifespan of the city through the eyes of a young family, illustrating how each member of the family develops an unhealthy and ultimately destructive relationship with the fizzy liquid beneath their feet. The project resulted in a series of large scale pencil drawings that were collated into my book ‘Fizzy Pop Paradise’

Treat Yerself Silly

This term Dookit Brewery set up a competition allowing students in our class to submit art work, that if chosen would be printed onto 1 of 3 beers launching in the coming months. My design was successful chosen to be printed on the ‘Treat Yerself Silly’ beer, a triple fruited sour beer launching as part of Redmonds Bars 10th anniversary celebration.

The Mask

For my first brief of the year I was given the task of re-designing the poster for the 1961 film ‘The Mask.’ While watching the film I decided I wanted to avoid drawing directly from the film itself, and instead take influence from the shots and imagery I found most intriguing to create something new that captures its unique tone and atmosphere.

Soapbox

For this project I was ask to design a gig poster and T-Shirt for Soapbox, an up and coming Glasgow punk band. The band had already decided before I came on board they were after something colourful and cartoonish and I was happy to oblige.
