(she/her)

The foundation of my practice centres around the relationship between the human body and landscape. Inspired by the theories of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, I investigate how our perception of landscape is influenced by our internal narrative. My work depicts the isolated cliff faces in Harris, abstracting the subject matter by using my memory as a reference. Through drawing and painting, I represent these cliff faces not as literal representations but as imagery that is embodied with my emotional response.

Dark cave openings, sharp vertical slates, and layered texture is displayed in the work through mark-making. Balancing the architectural and structured marks from fine liner, and the thick heavy marks of oil paint, I create compositions that are simultaneously close investigations of texture on the rocks’ surface, and depictions of the whole cliff face.

Within my work I navigate how scale impacts the body and evokes an internal response. When confronting these cliff faces, the viewer’s own scale is positioned as a stark contrast. Unease is experienced when confronting an object that makes our own body feel insignificant. The artworks, by using scale and installation aim to elicit this same response on the viewer. Paintings are positioned in the middle of enclosed spaces, looming high above the viewer with the thick gestural paint that encroach upon the viewers space, transforming the experience to something sensory.
