Marnie White

Marnie White is a multimedia artist exploring the interplay of videography, digital imagery, sculptural forms, printmaking and soundscape composition. Her practice is rooted in a personal and cultural connection to music, shaped by an upbringing in a sonic environment. Sound – particularly electronic music – has profoundly influenced her work, inspiring themes of movement, rhythm and layering.
She strives to merge the digital with the physical, creating immersive spaces through projections, layered graphics, and sculptural forms. This blending of mediums allows virtual ideas to take on physical form, bridging past experiences with the present.
Repetition and symbolism are central to her work, acting as visual echoes of a journey from childhood to adulthood. The recurring motifs encourage interpretation, inviting viewers to connect their own meanings to the pieces. This process is inherently collaborative, as the viewer becomes part of the artwork by engaging with its layers and symbols.
Soundscapes – whether found or produced – play an essential role in her installations. Paired with visuals, they heighten the immersive experience, evoking the emotional and sensory impact of music. Her goal is to create stimulating environments where audiences feel a connection to the work while reflecting on their own relationships with sound and movement.
Through her art, Marnie explores the power of music and sound to shape identity and memory, using these elements to craft layered, meaningful and immersive experiences that resonate both personally and universally.

Subsymbolic
Subsymbolic is a multimedia installation exploring the intertwined themes of childhood, memory, and music.
In psychology and cognitive science, subsymbolic refers to a mode of understanding cognition that emphasises patterns, associations, and relationships rather than explicit symbols or structured rules. I chose this title because it reflects how these intangible forces have shaped my sense of self.
At the heart of the installation is a central figure – my alter ego – placed within a world constructed from fragments of sound and symbolic elements drawn from my childhood. This character acts as a visual anchor, embodying my inner world and the emotional landscape of growing up immersed in music.
Rather than telling a literal story, the work evokes nostalgia and emotional resonance through playful, abstract forms: pops of colour, textured surfaces, rhythmic patterns, and layered audio. These symbols of sound and childhood aren’t meant to be decoded like language but felt – mirroring how the mind processes memory and emotion: through rhythm, sensation, and connection.
Subsymbolic captures that quiet complexity – how meaning can arise not from what is clearly said, but from what is deeply felt.
