Matthew Kriske

Matthew Kriske is an artist originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota. He moved to Glasgow after painting for a year in rural western Ireland. He has exhibited internationally, most recently with the 213th Exhibition of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour at Mall Galleries in London, and “What The Water Gave Me” a solo exhibition in Glasgow.
“My work as an artist is deeply rooted in themes of human intimacy, interaction, and memories both real and imagined. It explores concepts of disquiet in the quotidian and surreal ruptures into the sphere of the domestic and every day. These pieces probe and unpack ideas surrounding gender roles, social dynamics and the potential for spaces to underscore a feeling. The work produces a deep sense of physicality and presence which blurs the boundaries between the human body and the imagined space. Through their material handling, they invite close scrutiny and a deeper questioning of how we perceive our connection to both one another and the world around us. The intersection between strength and frailty, of delicacy and vulnerability are all key themes. I want to invite further conversation about how we perceive history, family and ourselves by exploring visual conventions that challenge and recontextualize expectations.”
