Maya Randall

(She/her)

My work sits between illustration, animation and design, revolving around storytelling. I’m interested in creating images that feel playful but slightly unsettling, often using symbolism, pattern and texture to build a sense of comfort, or discomfort, within a piece.

My practice involves printmaking, writing, drawing, mixed media collage and moving image. I like working in a hands-on way, and a lot of my projects begin physically through lino printing, drawing, building puppets or experimenting with materials before being developed digitally. Texture is a really important part of my work, and I’m interested in keeping things slightly imperfect and handmade, as I like how audiences can connect with visible materials and process.

I enjoy moving between different mediums, from children’s books and poster design to stop-motion and moving image, while keeping a strong focus on narrative, composition and material experimentation throughout.

INSIDE 237

A stop motion reinterpretation of the Room 237 scene from The Shining, developed alongside an essay exploring the idea that the horror within The Shining comes less from the supernatural and more from Jack Torrance’s psychological deterioration. Through cinematography, colour and set design, the film reimagines the bathroom sequence, presenting Jack himself as the source of fear.
