I am a multi-disciplinary artist with a research-led practice, guided by the objects and stories I find along the way. Having spent time in a wide range of archives, I have learnt that I am drawn to what is just out of reach or hidden beneath the surface. I am interested in the intangible emotions associated with memories and ways in which these feelings can be manifested within or evoked by a piece of art.
Recently I have turned my research more inward and am exploring my own identity through my family’s personal archives and stories of migration, and the connection/ disconnection that this has led me to feel towards places with particular significance such as Newcastle, India, and Scotland. This process has allowed me to explore how I situate myself within the world and the interwoven nature of history.
The idea of weaving is a constant within my practice both literally and metaphorically: I imagine that I am weaving together timelines, memories, and stories, whilst also using the physical process of weaving to develop tactile pieces of work. This may be using photographs I have taken or archival ephemera I have found, which I weave via multiple approaches such as through sound or on the loom. I enjoy the aesthetic effects created by this as the image or text is distorted, meaning the viewer has to work out what it is they are looking at. I create work that leaves itself open to interpretation and acts a as a question waiting for an answer, the context is waiting to be found by the viewer.
