Moa Hjärre Nettleton

As a designer a lot of my inspiration comes from writing. Therefore this year I have taken a more journalistic approach to design. Playing with the editorial format of a book and my own writing in order to understand the different elements that exist in terms of deciding how to best tell a story.

Additionally I have co-founded a newly established art gallery in Glasgow called Shift with my partner Ellis Bairstow. Combining both my interest in art and graphic design. For the gallery I work with curation and branding in order to create the identity and presence of this new creative space.

Lost Photos of Kilimanjaro

In 2020 at the age of 20 I climbed Kilimanjaro. I kept a journal of the climb and recorded details of temperature, altitude, environment and the details of the route. When I got back home I made a folder of my photos on my computer. Which I later found to be empty. All I had left was my journal. Using my journal I created a new visual interpretation of my climb in the form of this book.

The Rules of Snooker

Snooker is a sport with an unexpectedly beautiful aesthetic. It is also incredibly specific in how the game is meant to be played. Using the official rulebook I decided to make a more digestible rulebook. For both new and seasoned players. Paired with illustrations to break down the easiest of rules with straight forward diagrams to the most complicated with more abstract diagrams. Inviting anyone to read and enjoy the rules of snooker.

Capitalism´s Effect on Feminism

A book based on my dissertation which I wrote about feminism and the various effects capitalism has on it, how it has changed in time and what we can do about it. The dissertation itself is not about design but does touch on how capitalism has dumbed down feminism into pink imagery and then repackaged it and sold it back to us as feminism. As the viewer is taught to visually not question that the “pink book is about feminism”. I wanted the book to play on that irony and in turn make us question it.

School of Design / Communication Design / Moa Hjärre Nettleton / The Middleground: As Depicted in Film

The Middleground: As Depicted in Film

The following project is a response to a brief asking us to visually interpret the middleground. A visual art form which can be interpreted as a middleground in itself, which lies between art, design and writing is film. But middlegrounds can also be found within film between characters. The films chosen represent different scenarios in which characters are faced with a choice, a compromise, a form of being met with a middleground. With faces removed so that the focus is on the situation and not the actors. The book is separated into 3 acts much like in films scripts, written as beginning middle and end. The book itself becoming a new film script using existing films.
