Phoebe Morley

(She/Her)

My practice centres my body as the main medium, using performance as a way to express emotional states that often feel too complex or intense to put into words – particularly those shaped by anger, queerness, and resistance to patriarchal control. Through movement, I explore a personal, physical language that allows these feelings to emerge. Working in site-specific natural spaces allows my body to respond to the environment, shifting into poses that reflect the emotional and physical dynamics of each place.

In my most recent work, I’ve been drawn to forests – spaces I connect with deeply. I move through these landscapes slowly, observing their textures, marks, curves, and colours with an intimacy similar to how one might get to know a lover. These experiences feed into performances where I explore ideas of sexual liberation and queerness, often through wearing handmade sculptural costumes or placing my body in positions that feel powerful and grounded.

These performances form the basis for my figurative self-portraits, which I create using creamy, vibrant oil paint on wood or canvas. I work mostly from reference images taken during performance, painting femme-presenting bodies (usually my own) as a way to take ownership of my image and the stories I want to tell. My work often sits between vulnerability and defiance, using the body to speak to both personal experience and broader shared realities.

Lately, I’ve been exploring camouflage as a concept using dappled forest light to create soft, shifting patterns across the body that blur the line between figure and landscape. This merging challenges traditional portrayals of the nude and reimagines how bodies can exist within and as part of nature. I sometimes work in a limited, monochrome palette to “queer” the figure and interrupt the expectations that often come with viewing femme bodies in art.

Using my nude body is a conscious act of reclamation – taking back a sense of sexual power and agency that has been taken or denied through years of living under the gaze and control of men. I’m especially interested in how femme people are taught to perform gender in ways that cater to cishet expectations. In my portraits, I often include a direct, steady gaze between the subject and viewer – creating a moment of confrontation that disrupts typical power dynamics and challenges how the body is seen.

Through all of this, I want my work to hold space for expressions of sexuality, softness, anger, and autonomy. It’s about reclaiming visibility on my own terms, and offering alternative ways of seeing femme bodies – ones shaped by care, confrontation, and self-determined power.
