Rose Carmona

(She/her)

French and Scottish illustrator/designer, in my practice I love to push myself out of my comfort zone and trying out new techniques! In my final year, I created a 3D-painted wooden bed installation that goes alongside my lino-printed children’s book. My work primarily explores themes such as the human experience, emotions, and feelings. My practice ranges from using analog methods such as screenprinting, lino printing, and painting, but I also love to explore and play with digital mediums too.

A Bêtise to Remember

Drawn to the subjects of the human experience, emotions, and feelings that we all share, and can relate to, during my 4th year, I spent my time creating this lino-printed children’s book which explores the subject of grief and loss and how this complicated topic can be communicated to children. Throughout the book, we follow the story of Sasha and her best friend Spike, as they reflect on their favorite memories together.

This bittersweet story tenderly explores the intertwinement of the joy and pain that come with loss and offers comfort to those who’ve experienced grief. It shows children that cherished, often silly memories we share with loved ones, along with the valuable lessons they teach us, make us into the people we are today. These memories become a part of us, allowing us to hold onto them for the rest of our lives.

Where do our memories go when we sleep?

Inspired by folk art where art becomes practical and reflects what life as a community is onto objects, I illustrated, designed, and painted this bed and the sheets that come along with it as an installation that goes hand in hand with my children’s book. As a society, our memories with our loved ones are so important to us but where do they go when we fall asleep? Going to bed each night and having moments where we think and reminisce about people in our lives is something we all go through.

This bed is a space that offers people time to reflect on memories of loved ones who are no longer with us. It can also serve as a place for people to read the book, allowing them to immerse themselves in the universe I have created through my illustrations and contemplate the morals within the book.
