Scarlett Darnell
(She/her)
I am a multidisciplinary artist exploring themes of tourism, spectacle, and disconnect through an often humorous lens. My work is particularly concerned with the paradox of social media. Whilst it has an ability to open the world to much wider audiences than ever before, it can also create a sense of distance and detachment.
I found this to be especially evident in the work of travel content creators, whose narratives have inspired much of my practice. I am interested in how these mediated experiences can reshape how we perceive location, authenticity, and cultural distance. I believe this sense of disconnection to be particularly significant today in a wider global context, as cultural and political rifts increase. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine has emphasized the need to question how we perceive and engage with others across distance.
I often use methods such as printmaking, alongside newer interests in film and interactive installation. Participation is a key aspect of my practice, allowing for viewers to engage directly with the work through personal experiential encounters.
