Blood Land
‘Blood land’ is a complex metaphor for home: it originally referred to the land marked by the blood of childbirth and the bones of ancestors, whilst also representing the place where dramatic changes occur in one’s childhood and youth. It is the process by which an individual’s life story becomes irretrievably bound to a specific piece of land. Travelling along the coastline of Scotland, I began a journey in search of the ‘blood land’. The stones, decaying wood, ruins, and perishing creatures I encountered along the way prompted me to reconsider the relationship between individuals and the blood land. Beyond its inherent metaphor of violence and entanglement of home, the search for the blood land transformed into a process of self-acceptance, forgiveness, and embracing the change.
