(she/her)

When conceiving and learning, the fun and meaning of the work are very important to me. I believe that the work comes from vision, and vision comes from life and observation. I don’t want to make a work that is more about form than meaning, so I am used to observing people and things around me and thinking about them, which are all sources of inspiration. These projects are dedicated to exploring issues related to man and nature, the pursuit of self, and feminism.

I am very willing to hear suggestions and discussions, thank you for watching!

An Animated Apology

The content includes a middle finger gesture.

This is overall a two minute animation worked as an apology to my friend, in a fun and relaxing way. When I was about to sleep, I suddenly remembered a story of me making fun of an idol, then found out my friend was his big fan. I made this apologizing animation for her and turns out that she didn’t even remember this.

An Animated Apology

This is a project that aims to challenge myself doing work on mixed media and story telling. In the two minute animation, I told a story of a stupid thing I've done in high school, which is a story of me making fun of an idol, then found out my friend was his big fan. To tell this small mistake that I made in high school, I would want to present an animation in the style of a diary that combines stop-motion and stop frame animation.

Storyboard P1

This is the original storyboard of the animation, which tells the story and ideas. I drew this in the way of comic.

Working process: Stop motion puppet

I worked two times with stop motion puppet. At the very beginning the project was considered as a fully stop motion animation, so the first puppet was made as the design of myself. But the project was then changed, to use stop motion only in the part of the idol dancing on the phone.

Final stop motion puppet

The second stop-motion puppet is the final one shown in the animation.

PIGEONS

Pigeons are considered exceptional citizens in this place. Once the city’s hosts, their presence has caused some individuals to feel repulsed, leading to the appearance of hostile architecture. Actually, these hostile structures are also against some homeless people in addition to pigeons. Through development, he natural world has since been separated into territories, making it unusable for human or animal habitation. What sort of social setting is ideal? This project, which based on the observation of pigeons and incorporates the article The London Spikes Controversy: Homelessness, Urban Securitization, and the Question of “Hostile Architecture” by Australian scholar James Petty, aims to investigate the relationship between man and nature, urbanization, and living space.

The Film Poster

Personally, since I have rarely done manual printing before, I have
always been curious about various printing methods. This is a
relatively practical project. I hope that in addition to complete works,
I can also try some untried art projects. In this small project of Film
Poster, I will design a poster based on the old movie “The Night of
The Hunter” and try large-size screen printing. This is a project that
has caused me some difficulties, but I believe it will be helpful for
my future creations.

The Night of the Hunter is a black-and-white film with strong
religious connotations that combines black humour and horror. In
the film, a missionary entices a widow and murders her for property.
The widow’s son battles the missionary with cunning to defend the
property until he is adopted by a good woman and vanquishes the
wicked guy. There are numerous stunning views in the film, and it
makes good use of light, shadow, and audio-visual language. The
film is essentially about the conflict between hate and love, and how
love will win in the end

Final Outcome

This, in my opinion, was the best version when the printing was finished. The pattern represents the two important characters, while the two colors have a strong reflect against each other, which matches the theme of the film: the conflict between love and hate.

Sketches and Ideas

Design 1

This sketches one of my favorite scene in the film. The lights and shadow are really strong and shows a dark and nervous atmosphere.

Design 2

This is the original version of the final design. The drawings are a bit too tight, and the texts are not really clear. So it was then changed.

design 3

The color of this design actually matches quite well with the film - The Night of the Hunter. however, the text feels quite hard to read.

Design 4

This is a work of collage, using the scenes in the film.

Working process: Screen Printing

Because the pattern's design is quite simple, I believe that printing the poster in A1 size will allow the largest format to produce the best effects. The A1 size is somewhat more difficult to produce than the small one and calls for larger tools, but the process is very fascinating. I tried printing various coloured versions on five different papers that I bought

Working process: Screen Printing

Some of those ones on dark colored paper doesn't work very well, as light colors of screen printing did not show up on them. I worked this out quite fast to meet the time of screening, but it could be nicer if I do seperate layers of the background color and the character part. This might alow the green and yellow to work. Anyway, I was happy wirh the final outcome, and this leads me to the idea of using textile printing in my 4th project.

The Red Thread of the times

My grandmother, mother and I are three women who grew up in different times and at different stages of life. Our perspectives, experiences, and opinions about marriage vary, leading us to have differing opinions. However, when I abruptly brought up this subject with them, we all agreed that there is a covert gender discrepancy in Chinese marriages. What are the opinions of other Chinese women from various generations regarding marriage? In order to learn certain unspoken facts about women, I decided to pay attention to their voices.

The outcome is a wedding dress with the women’s views on marriage written on it in Nüshu (a type of writing that only belongs to women), along with three booklets, based on a questionnaire survey involving fifty females in China and study about some Chinese Artworks about marriage. This is a gift from a previous generation to a newer generation.

Final Outcome: The Wedding Dress

The final product of the project is a purely hand-sewn Chinese wedding dress with a big sleeve top, a skirt and a red hijab. The printed paterns are designed in Nüshu, among them, on both sides of the sleeves of the top is the project title: The Red Thread of the Times, which is made of fabric.

Daily Sketches

In addition to studio projects, I also drew some daily practice works, including drawings of museum collections during my trip to Edinburgh, and sketches when I went out on my own. Although these daily exercises have no fixed theme, I think they are very helpful for recording and finding inspiration.
