As You Were Taught

My installation explores femininity, objectification and self-surveillance through projection, photography and sculptural elements. The work developed from my research into beauty standards, social media culture and postfeminism, focusing on the pressure women face to constantly present and reshape themselves for public consumption.

As a woman myself, I reflected on my own experiences growing up in a society where femininity and appearance are continuously judged and performed. I became interested in how these pressures begin in childhood and continue into adulthood, changing form but still carrying the same underlying expectations. From dolls and beauty culture to influencer aesthetics and cosmetic enhancement, I wanted to explore how objectification is often disguised as empowerment and self-expression.

Influenced by theorists such as Laura Mulvey and Rosalind Gill, I used distorted projections, immersive space and mannequin-like forms to create an environment that feels both seductive and unsettling, encouraging viewers to reflect on how beauty, identity and self-worth are shaped within contemporary digital culture.
