Inside Iona Abbey
Iona Abbey, located on the Isle of Iona, is a site of incredible history, from the Vikings to the Book of Kells. For this project, we were tasked with creating an interactive VR experience. I chose to model the interior of this incredible abbey after visiting over the summer, with an interactable feature that lets users change the time of day and see how light passes through the environment. Modelling the environment was no easy task, with some of Scotland’s earliest medieval carved stones and crosses, the amount of detail packed into this building is unbelievable. I’ve developed tools within the 3D modelling software used to help create more detailed brickwork and capture the range of colours within the stonework. A challenge faced for this project was optimising the model to run in VR. To help me with this, I developed another tool to reduce and bake brick textures, dramatically increasing the program’s functionality.
