Ziyi Yan

I’m a graduate of the Communication Design program at the Glasgow School of Art, with a focus on Illustration. My work is deeply rooted in everyday life and personal experience, often revolving around themes of identity and self-exploration. I enjoy working with a variety of materials, and I’m particularly drawn to experimenting across media to discover unexpected visual outcomes.

My illustration style spans a wide range—from delicate realism to narrative-driven imagery. In my final project, I explored drawing as a way to observe and reflect on the self, using line and texture to express emotional undercurrents and personal perspective. I’m passionate about drawing from life and capturing the subtle, sincere moments that often go unnoticed.

I’m currently exploring how illustration can act as a tool for emotional expression and storytelling, and I’m open to collaborating on projects that engage with topics like identity, embodiment, and lived experience.

A PUB FOR……

This project is based on observational drawing in pubs, where I explored themes of solitude, connection, and cultural identity through close attention to everyday gestures, atmospheres, and spatial relationships. As an international student in a culturally unfamiliar environment, I was drawn to pubs as a site of strong local identity and subtle social dynamics. By quietly observing and reinterpreting these moments through drawing, I reflected on my own position as a cultural outsider — how I watched, felt, and coexisted within this unfamiliar space.

The work combines stillness and sensitivity, using drawing as a medium for self-exploration and emotional navigation. Through this process, I came to understand that belonging doesn’t necessarily mean blending in, but learning how to stay present with difference. This project is both a personal record and a way of reaching toward others — an attempt to map emotional distance and quiet connection in shared public space.

The Person I Met Was Me

This project is a personal reflection on intimacy, identity, and self-awareness through drawing. Based on my relationship with my ex-girlfriend, it uses observational sketches to trace the emotional shifts, struggles, and self-discoveries within and beyond love. Rather than telling a love story, the work explores how intimacy becomes a mirror—revealing how we connect, express, and come to understand who we are.
